Some people may not want to set their screensaver automatically. I have many favorites that I set depending on my mood, time of the year, time of day or whether entertaining guests etc. This gives my living room or any room in my house a relaxing, ambient vibe when we are not watching television.

When I am not playing media and there is no activity on my computer, I play a video screensaver which loops automatically on my TV Screen. (the computer connected to my TV that runs XBMC). I am already doing this by setting video screensavers on my Acer Revo. The answer is THEY WILL! It is just a matter of time. So why do people not do the same with their HD televisions? Well, the simple answer is that their computer screens look nice when they are not using them.

Why do people use screensavers in the first place?

I then have all the cover art and movie information on my XBMC and can play videos seamlessly.

This enables me to download videos straight to my drives and simply run a media scan on XBMC. I myself run Kodi (formerly XBMC) and stream media to my TV wirelessly through my router, which has network hard drives attached to it. They have easy user interfaces to allow control through a remote control to make the functionality easier than using a keyboard and mouse. These boxes are essentially computers connected to televisions to enable media to played on a your TV. Apple TV’s are also a fairly new way of playing media through your TV and there are a host of other media solutions like Kodi (XBMC), Roku and many more. Most of the new Smart TVs have internet capabilities and it won’t be long before people are downloading and installing things right on their TV.

What people are slow to realise is that HD TV’s are becoming computers in their own rights. Screensavers are massively popular for computers and laptops, for example the word “screensaver” gets about 2 million searches per month on Google alone. People are quite slow to catch on to the future, only Roku seems to offer a TV screensaver option. In addition, Roku’s recently added “Live TV” zone on the Home Menu will now also include your recently watched Live TV content, in addition to pointing you to the free live and linear content from The Roku Channel and live TV services like Hulu, fuboTV, Sling, and YouTube TV.It amazes me how slowly the TV screensaver market is moving. As the streaming landscape has grown more competitive, it’s been harder to keep up with what content is available and from where, so a centralized place to keep an eye on popular titles could be welcome. These recommendations will also take into account popular and trending content and titles that were recently added, Roku said. In this case, Roku will leverage data to make suggestions of what movies and shows you may like based on what streaming channels users most frequently interacted with.

This makes the photo stream feature collaborative and a way to stay in touch over distances.Īnother notable addition included in this update is the launch of “What to Watch,” another Roku-powered destination on the Home Menu. When this stream is shared, friends and family can add their own photos to contribute to the shared album. But what makes the feature interesting is that users can upload and share their Streams with other Roku users, so your photos can appear on their device, too. To use the option, users will upload images to their Roku device through their desktop or mobile phone, which turns their TV into a digital photo album of sorts. The Roku Photo Streams screensaver feature is the highlight for this update.

Roku will also add a new home screen destination that offers personalized suggestions of what movies and TV series to watch from across its streaming channels.Īdditionally, the update includes automated speech clarity, new sound modes, and an updated mobile app, among other things. One of the key new features arriving with the latest OS is the launch of Roku Photo Streams, which allows users to create a personalized screensaver with their own photos and even share photos to other users’ TVs. Roku today is introducing the latest version of its streaming TV software, Roku OS 11 - an update that, this time, focuses on adding more personalization to the Roku platform, in addition to the typical usability and performance improvements included with these releases.
